When is the Best Time to Visit Morocco?
The most honest answer: it depends entirely on which part of Morocco you want to see.
Morocco spans four distinct climate zones — Atlantic coast, Imperial cities, High Atlas mountains, and Saharan desert — and they each behave completely differently across the calendar year.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January & February — Winter - **Marrakech & Imperial Cities:** Cool and crisp (5–15°C). Perfect for medina exploration without heat exhaustion. Occasional rain in Fes and Chefchaouen. - **Sahara Desert:** Cold nights (near freezing) but beautifully clear blue-sky days. The dunes are stunning. - **Atlantic Coast (Taghazout):** Excellent surf season. Water around 18°C. - **Best for:** Surfers, medina lovers, budget travelers (lowest peak prices).
March & April — Spring (Best Overall Season) - **Everywhere:** The golden window. Wildflowers blanket the Atlas, temperatures are perfect, and crowds have not yet arrived. - **Sahara:** Ideal — warm days, cool nights, zero chance of extreme heat. - **Atlas Mountains:** Snow still on High Atlas peaks (stunning backdrop) but passes are open. - **Best for:** First-time visitors who want the full Morocco experience.
May — Transition - **Marrakech:** Starting to get warm (30°C+). Go early morning. - **Coastal areas:** Heating up nicely. Agadir and Essaouira are perfect. - **Best for:** Coastal and mountain trips.
June, July & August — Summer - **Marrakech, Fes, Meknes:** Extreme heat. 38–42°C in July. Not recommended unless you stay indoors between 11am–5pm. - **Chefchaouen:** Much more tolerable at altitude. A summer favourite. - **Taghazout & Essaouira:** Excellent. The Atlantic trade winds keep temperatures at 22–26°C — essentially the most pleasant place in all of Africa. - **Sahara:** Avoid entirely. 50°C+ in the dunes. - **Best for:** Coastal escapes, Chefchaouen, Atlas trekking.
September & October — Golden Autumn (Best for Sahara) - **Sahara:** The premier desert season. Temperatures return to 25–30°C. Crystal clear skies. Absolutely stunning. - **Marrakech:** Cooling down from summer heat. Evenings are perfect. - **High Atlas:** Ideal trekking season before winter snow. - **Best for:** Sahara itineraries, full Morocco routes.
November & December — Late Autumn - **Marrakech:** Cool and very pleasant. Holiday-period crowds pick up in December. - **Sahara:** Still excellent. Cold nights add drama to the desert experience. - **Best for:** Couples, honeymoons, slower pace travelers.
